Nonlinear Seminar Schedule for 2005-2006
Previous Nonlinear Seminars
This weekly seminar series brings to Northwestern University well-known researchers from other universities and government and industry laboratories. The seminars cover a broad spectrum of topics that reflect the broad applicability of the conceptual framework and mathematical techniques of nonlinear science and also the broad range of research interests of the participants of the IGERT program. As a regular feature of the series, the IGERT students take the speaker to lunch with no other faculty present. This scenario gives the students ample opportunity to interact with the speakers so as to learn about their research, establish professional connections, and learn about life in academia, research laboratories, and industry.
Focus Topics Seminars
Focus Topics Seminars Schedule for 2004-2005
Previous Focus Topics Seminars
Within the framework of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Nonlinear Science, faculty and students are given the opportunity to organize a mini-series of talks (4-6) on a specific topic of their choice. These talks are part of the Seminar Series, and talks on a specific topic extend over a period of one or two quarters. This continuity allows the students to build up in a more systematic way their knowledge on those specific areas, chosen on the basis of their scientific and technological relevance. So far the focus topics series have covered:
- Computational neuroscience
- Nonlinear dynamics of stellar and planetary systems
- Complexity in biological systems
- Complexity in environmental systems
- Complexity in granular systems
A series on Nonlinear Optics will be the focus of several seminars during the 2003-2004 academic year. Various focus topic series have been organized by faculty who at the time were not associated with IGERT. This type of series has thus also served as a tool for increasing the base of active members of our program.
Graduate Student Seminar
Graduate Student Seminars Schedule for 2005-2006
Previous Graduate Student Seminars
The student seminar series is intended to give IGERT fellows and other graduate students an opportunity to have active discussions on scientific and career-oriented subjects. Faculty are discouraged from attending.
All seminars take place in room M416 of the Technological Institute. For directions, click here. Each seminar will be followed by dinner (courtesy of the IGERT program) and discussion.

Seminar for Women in Science and Engineering
Seminar for Women in Science and Engineering Schedule for 2004-2005
Previous Seminars for Women in Science and Engineering
The Seminar for Women in Science and Engineering provides an informal forum for the discussion of topics of interest to women in science and engineering. It seeks to create interpersonal networks that span disciplines, to address career and family issues, to highlight the work of women in science and engineering, and to facilitate professional mentoring.
The seminar consists of three meetings per quarter. Two of these meetings feature invited speakers, while the third is an open, informal discussion of a particular topic and of readings related to that topic.
All meetings take place in room L550 of the Technological Institute. For directions, click here.
For seminar information, subscribe to the women-in-science-and-engineering mailing list by sending an e-mail to lists@esam.northwestern.edu with "subscribe women_sci_eng" followed immediately by your e-mail address in the body of the e-mail.
Please contact Carol Braun with questions or comments.

Brown Bag Lunches
Brown Bag Lunches Schedule for 2004-2005
Previous Brown Bag Lunches
The Informal Brown Bag Lunch Seminars, which were a new IGERT program beginning Spring 2003, are meant to function as a more interactive and informal version of other seminars. Speakers are told to prepare a 30 minute talk on their most recent research, but the attendants are encouraged to interrupt as often as they like, often extending the event to a 60 minute lunch-time dialogue. The seminars without a listed speaker are purposely listed as such, and are simply intended for socializing.
Nonlinear Workshops
These workshops bring together researchers from a wide range of research areas dealing with complex and/or nonlinear systems. The workshops are intended for an audience of non-specialists, and students in particular are welcome.
